Behringer UM2 OLD DRIVERS and differences with new ones.

For the ones that purchased a Behringer UM2 audio interface, you'll know it works without any drivers for basic recording. However, to make it fully operational (like enabling the second input), you need to install some software.

In the Behringer website, there used to be custom Behringer drivers for this particular device. Now the site just redirects to ASIO web, where you can download the standard ASIO drivers. As they're not custom, they don't work as good as the old drivers (keep reading).

Differences with new drivers

There is one major very important difference.

With the new drivers the system install a generic USB audio driver and the PC sees the interface in Recording devices as a microphone input. When you try to record with a simple software like Audacity or simply you want the audio to sound through the Stereo Mix, you can only hear what is plug in the mic input of the interface. To use the second channel you have to use complex software like DAWs and mess with ASIO.

With the old drivers the system install a custom Behringer USB audio driver and the PC sees the interface in Recording devices as a line input. Now, all the inputs of the interface work without further trouble. You can capture the sound with the program you want and it will sound through the Stereo Mix as well. You don't need ASIO for anything.

It has been a hard job to find the old drivers in the internet for this model but here they are:

Behringer UM2 64-bits Windows 7/8 drivers, version 2.8.40.
(Sorry but I don't have any other version, OS, nor architecture).

Update (23/06/2020): Reader Ceiba Groove comments that got the drivers working in Windows 10 under compatibility mode.

https://mega.nz/#!fpF2RD6S!tdk6sCz1ePU77DMySDpJIsauvOCW-Zjxve_ixqq71UI

The 'Readme' file says they should work for
'UMA25S, UCA200*, UCA202, UCA222, UFO202, UCG102, iAXE393/624/629 and many more.

*bundled with UMX series, XENYX mixers, PODCASTUDIO USB

This driver does NOT support the following BEHRINGER hardware:
C-1U, BCD2000, BCD3000.
These models have separate dedicated drivers'

Enjoy, and if you need some help, let me know in the comments.

Interesting - why would they stop publishing them and started refer to ASIO4ALL?

    1. Hi Michael, we'll never know, but I'd say, as this driver used to be the one for almost all Behringer audio interfaces, and now they use different drivers for each one, I think Behringer hasn't bothered in developing a custom driver for this cheap low range interface while it work with the standard ASIO.

    1. Hi Saptarshi, the right knob is for that purpose. If you want to control the volume of direct monitoring and what comes from the PC independently, as everything is output through the headphones, you can adjust the PC sound in Windows and then control the overall headphone output with the knob, that's what I do. Cheers.

    1. Hi Jermel,

in order to use a condenser mic properly you need to activate phantom power switch in the back and use a proper cable with XLR in both ends. Any kind of TRS XLR adapter is going to fail. First I'd input something simple like a MP3 player to make sure everything ir working.

Not to mention, obviously, you need an audio recording software like Audacity to pick the sound. Trying to output the sound straight through the computer speakers is pointless because of latency problems, for real time listening you have to use the direct monitoring button, which is intended for that purpose.

  11. Hey do you have any idea if this works with android? I'm currently using a behringer uca202 for a nexus 7 car install but never got the mic working becuase the uca202 requires line inputs.

Also I can't find any specs on the UM2 to see what kind of mic input levels it accepts. I measured the factory mic in my car and it was 3000ohm

And last question is the output control knob for the headphones only or for both headphones and rca output?

    1. Hi Steeven,

as for the Android question, sorry man, no idea about that. I neither have an Android phone to try.

The specs on inputs levels and impedances can be found in the user manual, page 42. Here's in PDF:

      http://www.audiopro.cz/project/templates/default/pages/dokumenty/66_UMC404_UMC204_UMC202_UMC22_UM2_QSG_WW.pdf

The output knob controls both the headphone and the rca outputs.

      Cheers.

    2. Hi Yağmur,

The setup is tested in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Yes, your problem can be W10.

The only thing I can suggest is trying to install it in compatibility mode, selecting Windows 7. If you don't know how to do this check this out:

      http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/set-compatibility-mode-windows-10
(Skip the beginning and jump straight to 'How to Run an App in Compatibility Mode').

If this works for you, please reply so we can know.
      Cheers.

    3. I was able to run the program in compatibility mode for windows 8 and have the drivers install properly, but only when I started with the device unplugged and plugged it in when prompted. Before, there was static in the background of my Mic. Now, since windows detects the input as "line in", I am only picking up audio in my left ear, and there is no way to change the recording device from 2 channel back to 1 channel which is how I fixed the problem before. Any help on this issue would be great.

    1. and if I uninstall the driver I can't use the interface as before, my laptop won't recognise it. wtf

      Delete
    2. Obviously it records in mono, because if you connect either a mic with a XLR plug or a line input with a jack, both are mono inputs. There is no way you can get a stereo recording from one input. In fact, if you try to record stereo, what you get is input 1 in the L channel and input 2 in the R.

      Delete
    3. Yeah but I assume the point would be to use the two line ins at the same time but since it records one line in to the left and the other to the right it's kind of useless. Can't I undo this whole stuff?

      Delete
    4. It isn't useless, you are supposed to split the L and R signal in your audio editor and you're done, you come up with 2 mono signals. I don't know what software you use, but in Audacity is dead simple.

What they did was something very clever to keep it simple. If you want to receive the audio in your PC as 2 independent sources you can use the current drivers from the manufacturer website, but you'll need a good audio editor that supports it and ASIO. I tried, but I can't think of any advantage of doing this.

To make your computer recognise the interface as the first time, I guess it'll do the trick if you uninstall the driver from the Device Manager. Plug the interface, go to Device Manager and find it (may be under audio or USB stuff), right click, uninstall. Then you may need to unplug and plug the thing or even restart the PC.

    6. Hey, could you help me again please? The first problem is that I want to record drums with UM2 in Audacity so I installed the driver again so I could use the second line in too, where I would use a dynamic microphone. But it doesn't get any signal from the mike only from guitar. Or I was just dumb to think it would work with a mike? I can't use mikes in line 2?

And the other problem is even if I record something in line 1 and I separate the tracks, the line 1 still plays in the far left and line 2 in the far right, and if I set them to the opposite side, for instance: the line 1 which plays in the left, I try to set to the right to be in the middle it just gets quieter in the left. Do you any solutions to this?

      Delete
    7. Hi,

input 2 is intended for line input, not mic. It doesn't have mic preamp as the input 1 does, so chances are it's not going to work very well with your dynamic mic. I'd say it'd work but not loud enough. If it doesn't work at all maybe you have a problem somewhere else. Try to plug it to input 1 to see if it works.

What you say that happens to you when splitting the track is because you aren't splitting it properly. In Audacity, click in 'Split Stereo to Mono'. Check this pic if you don't know where to find the option. http://manual.audacityteam.org/m/images/1/16/split_stereo_track.png

      Cheers.

      Delete
    8. Well yes it works in line 1 but I would use two microphones one dynamic in the bass drum and one condenser for the other drums, but I guess that won't work out. But anyways thank you, I didn't know how to split properly!

  19. Hello! Thanks a lot for the driver, I was not able to run both inputs, now it works.
I wanted to ask you some questions.
Is input 1 unique to microphones or can I connect a bass without doing it wrong? Or is it better to always connect the bass in input 2 and leave the input 1 free?
    And one more thing:
To record I put the volume of the Behinger to the maximum, or I leave it in the middle and I modify the volume in the pc? Sorry if there is any mistake of understanding, im from Argentina and I am using a translator ;D
    Greetings!

    1. Hi Enzo, you can plug line inputs (like a guitar or a bass) to any of the inputs, so yes it's fine if you connect a bass to input 1.
For better quality you should turn your PC volume to max and adjust the amplification with the knobs in the interface. The lower the amplification the better quality.
      Cheers.

    3. Hey, another question, when I connect headphones to the interface, the bass sounds for them. Is there any way I can not hear it? Because when I put some effect for example in the Guitar Rig, I hear two overlapping basses, because on the one hand, I hear it clean from the console and at the same time I hear the effect.

  21. The Audacity forum has this solution:

These are the steps for configuring Windows Vista for recording from a Behringer UCA 202. The steps for other USB sound cards on both Vista and Windows 7 are likely to be similar. I would recommend following this list carefully step-by-step, including the "optional" steps.

To configure Recording using the Behringer UCA 202 USB:

    Start button > Control Panel
(Control Panel Home not Classic View) > Click on "Hardware and Sound"
    Click on "Sound"
    Click on the "Recording" tab
Click on "USB Adio Codec" (so that it is highlighted)
    Click the "Properties" button
(Optional) Type "UCA 202 Line Input" in the text box
(Optional) Click the "Change Icon" button, select the icon that
looks like Line-in connectors and click "OK"
Ensure that "Use this device (enable)" is selected at the bottom
    Click the "Apply" button
    Click on the "Advanced" tab
In the "default format" button (drop-down list) select "2 channels
16 bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality)"
Ensure that the two "exclusive mode" options are selected
    Click the "Apply" button
Click on the "Levels" tab, set the slider to 100 and click the "OK" button
    Click the "OK" button

To configure Playback using the Behringer UCA 202 USB:

    Start button > Control Panel
(Control Panel Home not Classic View) > Click on "Hardware and Sound"
    Click on "Sound"
Ensure that the "Playback" tab is selected
Click on "USB Adio Codec" (so that it is highlighted)
    Click the "Properties" button
(Optional) Type "UCA 202 Line Output" in the text box
(Optional) Click the "Change Icon" button, select the icon that
looks like Line-out connectors and click "OK"
Ensure that "Use this device (enable)" is selected at the bottom
    Click the "Apply" button
Click on the "Levels" tab and set the level to 100
Click on the "Balance" button and ensure that both "L" and "R" are
    set to 100
Ensure that the "speaker" icon does not have a "red circle with
diagonal line" on it (that symbol means that output is muted)
    Select the "Enhancements" tab
Select "Disable All Enhancement" and click the "Apply" button (for
recording purposes it is best to aim for "accuracy" over
    "enhancement")
    Select the "Advanced" tab
Select "16 bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality)"
Ensure that the two "exclusive mode" options are selected
Click the "Apply" button (only available if you have made changes)
    Click the "OK" button
    Click the "OK" button

  25. Hey, dude. I have a problem. I've installed a lot of different drivers, include this one but my problem won't solved: In "Default Format" from my recording settings, there is only the channel 2 option to choose (between 44100 and 48000 Hz, both 16 bits).

Where's channel 1? Without this one, all sounds are been recorded and playing by one side (left side in this case).

    1. Hello Ceiba,

if I were you, I'd uninstall everything that you already installed and after that, install the drivers provided in the post. 2 programs prompted? If memory serves, there are no additional things to install. This package only contains the bare drivers. Did you installed the right file?

Apart, if you connect a microphone to input 2, it's not going to work because input 2 is for line input only (there no preamp). You can connect for example, a CD player, a PC, a guitar pedal...

Hope you find a solution soon.

    2. Hi Pedro, first of all thanks for all your responses. All are appreciated. I couldn't install it on windows 7, and it was not two programs (as I said) that it prompted to istall, but 2 drivers instead. Well I got it installed but with lots of bugs for other programs running simultaneously and no line 1 input whatsoever. Anyway I moved on to win 10 (which installed ok the driver you offered under compatibility mode) and tested also on a Mac (no drivers needed), and in both cases I get Inst 2 ok (right output), but got a very low signal from a mic input (conventional mic with TRS plug). Would you have any idea on how to increase the mic's gain?
Another thing, I got a phantom powered mic but I suppose I need a XLR en to it in order to get powered, am I right? (that is TRS is not possible to be powered via phantom right?
      Thanks for all.

      Delete
    3. Hi Ceiba, you're welcome. In W7 it should work fine, but yeah, it may happens that several programs may be conflicting.
As I said, you can't input a mic through input 2 because it lacks a preamp, that's why the sound isn't loud enough. Only input 1 has a preamp for microphones, it says it in the front "Xenyx Mic Preamp". It doesn't matter your mic is TRS or XLR, no conventional mic is going to sound right through input 2. This input is only for instruments that don't require preamplification like a keyboard line out.
Phantom power is only delivered through XLR connectors. If you use a phantom mic with a TRS cable, it's not going to work. Of course, phantom power is only output through input 1.
So then, you confirm that this drivers work on W10 under compatibility mode? If so, I'll add it to the post.
      Cheers!

  30. Yes, I confirm it works on windows 10, I just must say I installed it under recommended compatibility mode. And indeed I'm running the instrument through input 2. My dinamic microphone runs through input 1 and output is really low but it seems, according to this site:

"You'd lose one of the signals, since it goes to the ground"
